Malik Tillman, Ricardo Pepi and PSV failed to pick up their first piece of silverware of the new Dutch season on Sunday.
Both Tillman and Pepi featured in PSV’s 4-2 penalty shootout loss to Feyenoord in the Dutch Super Cup. Tillman started, assisted once, and played 90 minutes while Pepi featured off the bench in the shootout.
Both players scored in their respective shootout attempts, but Guus Til and Johan Bakayoko missed from the spot.
Noa Lang and Santiago Gimenez traded goals in the first half before Bart Nieuwkoop propelled Feyenoord in front 2-1 before the break.
Tillman set up Luuk de Jong equalizing goal lead three minutes after the interval. It marked Tillman’s 16th career assist for the reigning Eredivisie winners.
Gimenez’s second penalty-kick goal of the day regained the lead for Feyenoord in the 54th minute but Til would tie things up 3-3 in the 65th.
Antoni Milambo looked to have boosted Feyenoord in front for good, but de Jong’s second goal of the afternoon tied the match 4-4 with 10 minutes to play.
Pepi replaced de Jong before the final whistle after the veteran forward left the match with an apparent injury. The former FC Dallas standout stepped up and scored from the spot to give PSV an early shootout advantage.
However, both Bakayoko and Til were denied in the second and third rounds respectively before Tillman pulled PSV to within one in the fourth round. Luka Ivanusec delivered the winner for Feyenoord as last season’s second place finishers picked up their first trophy of the season.
Both Tillman and Pepi will open their league schedule on August 10 against Waalwijk.
