Gavi is one of many Barcelona first-team players nursing an injury heading into the new season.

The young midfielder suffered a serious knee ligament injury while on international duty last November and has been out of action ever since.

According to FIFA’s player protection program, clubs are entitled to compensation for injuries sustained by their players while on international duty. Barça, to that end, appear to be a key beneficiary.

Barcelona to pocket €5 million from Gavi’s injury

As reported by Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona could be set to receive a significant financial boost as a result of the long-term injury suffered by Gavi.

The compensation is calculated based on the player’s fixed salary, with a maximum payout of €7.5 million per player per injury. With Gavi now sidelined for almost nine months, Barcelona are on course to receive approximately €5 million.

The Catalan giants have been hit hard by injuries in recent seasons, with key players missing significant periods of time. Barcelona, therefore, have activated similar compensation packages for the injuries of Pedri and Ronald Araujo as well.

Even in the case of Gavi, Barcelona could pocket up to €7 million if the midfielder does not return to action by November 19.

While the financial windfall is undoubtedly welcome, it is a bitter pill to swallow given the loss of such a talented young player, whose presence could be key as Barça embark on a new era under Hansi Flick.

When will Gavi return?

There is still hope that Gavi can return to action by October, but Barcelona will be cautious in their approach to his recovery.

The club will be monitoring his progress closely and will not rush him back into action. He is, however, currently in the final phase of his recovery.

In the meantime, Barcelona will look to utilise FIFA’s compensation to try and balance their books, as they look to return to the 1:1 rule…
