PARIS – In a race that saw the top five swimmers separated by 0.32 seconds, Tennessee Lady Vol Mona McSharry battled in the 100 breast, touching the wall in third to win a bronze medal for Ireland during day three of Olympic competition.

McSharry’s performance marked the first-ever medal in a breaststroke event for Ireland at the Summer Games, and she joined Michelle Smith as the only Irish swimmers ever to win a medal. Smith brought home four medals—three gold—during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Clocking a time of 1:05.59, McSharry touched the wall just 0.01 seconds ahead of Olympic Champion Lilly King (USA) and World Champion Benedetta Pilato (Italy), who finished tied for fourth. By winning the bronze, McSharry became just the second Lady Vol ever to win an Olympic medal in an individual event, joining Christine Magnuson’s silver medal performance for Team USA at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Tennessee swimming has now won two medals this week in Paris, as Erika Connolly helped the U.S. 4×100 free relay to a silver medal. It marked the third medal of her career. In total, UT boasts 17 Olympic medals between its men’s and women’s programs.

Also competing in a final on the day, fellow Irish swimmer Ellen Walshe took eighth overall in the 400 IM with a time of 4:40.70. Competing in her second Olympic Games, she swam in the 100 fly earlier in the meet, placing 22nd. Canada’s Ella Jansen—a 2024 signee for the Lady Vols—made her Olympic debut in the 400 IM, touching the wall in 4:42.06  to come in 11th.

Swimming in her third Summer Games, Kira Toussaint of the Netherlands punched her ticket to the 100 back semifinals, where she placed 14th overall with a time of 1:00.37. She could be an option for the Dutch 4×100 medley relay later in the week.

A result missed from Saturday’s racing, Gui Caribe swam on the Brazilian 4×100 free relay team. He led off the race with a blazing 48.57 split, which was the fifth-fastest leadoff time in the field. Brazil finished 10th behind a 3:14.22 effort.

Six Vols and Lady Vols will take the pool Tuesday morning during prelims. The trio of Caribe, Jordan Crooks (Cayman Islands) and Lamar Taylor (Bahamas) will compete in the men’s 100 free, while Jillian Crooks (Cayman Islands) will swim in the women’s 100 free. Martin Espernberger (Austria) and Lyubomir Epitropov (Bulgaria) will compete in their lone events of the games, swimming in the 200 fly and 200 breast, respectively.
